Does subsidizing legume seeds improve farm productivity and nutrition in Malawi?

چکیده

Over the last two decades, most African governments have been implementing agricultural input subsidy programs (ISPs) aimed at increasing crop yields, and incomes, reducing hunger, nutritional insecurity, poverty. Although ISPs are popular policy interventions, it remains unknown whether they improve productivity of nutrient-dense crops such as legumes, dietary quality, child or adolescent nutrition. We address this gap by testing hypothesis that subsidizing legume seeds (SLS) improves farm productivity, To do this, we use decade-long nationally representative panel data from Malawi regression models with an instrumental variable approach to endogeneity. found SLS increases area planted crops, groundnut yield, gross value production, along production consumption (dietary) diversity, calories, micronutrient—vitamin A zinc—consumption. further is positively correlated weight-for-age Z-score but not height-for-age Z-score. These novel findings emphasize could be among key interventions malnutrition in Malawian small sector.

Can we improve the nutritional quality of legume seeds?

The Food and Agriculture Organization statistics for 2001 (http://apps.fao.org/page/collections? subset agriculture) show that 274 million metric tons of grain legumes were produced across the world, of which 177 million were soybeans (Glycine max; one-half of which were produced in the U.S.) compared with 2 trillion metric tons of cereals. Legume seeds are put to a myriad of uses, both nutriti...

Water binding in legume seeds.

The physical status of water in seeds has a pivotal role in determining the physiological reactions that can take place in the dry state. Using water sorption isotherms from cotyledon and axis tissue of five leguminous seeds, the strength of water binding and the numbers of binding sites have been estimated using van't Hoff analyses and the D'Arcy/Watt equation. These parameters of water sorp...

Does Material and Service Offshoring Improve Domestic Productivity?

An increasing number of manufacturers are shifting some stages of the production process offshore. This study investigates the effects of offshoring on productivity in Japanese manufacturing industries for the period 1988-2004. Material offshoring, as measured by an import share of intermediate material inputs, has steadily increased during the period, with a pronounced increase in offshoring t...

Measurement , Farm Size and Productivity

Agricultural economists have long debated the efficiency and viability of smallholder agriculture. While much research has shown that small farmers in developing regions are often more efficient than larger farmers, some have challenged the validity of that evidence, citing potential problems that come with farmers' selfreporting of land size. If smaller farmers systematically under-report the ...

Asparagine metabolism-key to the nitrogen nutrition of developing legume seeds.

Asparagine accounted for 50 to 70% of the nitrogen carried in translocatory channels serving fruit and seed of white lupin (Lupinus albus L.). Rates of supply of the amide always greatly exceeded its incorporation as such into protein. An asparaginase (l-asparagine amido hydrolase EC 3.5.1.1) was demonstrated in crude extracts of seeds. In vitro activity was up to 5 mumoles of aspartate formed ...
